DIRECTOR OF COUNSELING AND SPECIAL SERVICES

The Director of Counseling and Special Services reports to the Dean of Students and coordinates the delivery of educational, personal, career, and transfer counseling services to students, with specific responsibility for personal counseling and special services.  The Director also coordinates the delivery of special services to students with disabilities. Primary responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Manages the day-to-day operation of the Counseling Center.
  2. Supervises and evaluates counselors, clerical staff, and student staff assigned to the Counseling Center; recommends candidates for vacant positions to the Dean of Students.
  3. Coordinates with colleagues to assure consistency and ongoing communication regarding recruitment, admissions, advising, testing, registration, and assistance to students with personal concerns and special needs.
  4. Counsels and advises students with special attention to students who have emotional problems and special needs.
  5. Assures that policies and procedures are carried out, that Division goals are achieved, and that the Counseling Center operates effectively and efficiently.
  6. Assures that emergency response procedures and resource directories for referral are up-to-date.
  7. Evaluates the needs of students seeking counseling services, and implements programs and services to meet those needs.
  8. Coordinates computerized career exploration programs and other tools for assisting students to clarify career and transfer goals.
  9. Coordinates meetings with prospective students who may need special services, and information dissemination to local schools and agencies serving disabled students to assure that they are aware of campus services.
  10. Assesses psycho educational and other documents submitted in order to determine the eligibility of disabled students for accommodations.
  11. Coordinates the provision of special accommodations to students with disabilities.
  12. Facilitates greater awareness of the needs of students with disabilities, and consults with faculty, administrators, and support staff in assisting them.
  13. Coordinates record-keeping and generates reports of students served by the Counseling Center, numbers and categories of disabled students, and other outcomes.
  14. Sets annual goals and assures that counseling services are carried out in accordance with institutional priorities and division goals.
  15. Proposes an annual budget and monitors budget expenditures.
  16. Prepares an annual report describing goals, activities, outcomes, and highlights.
  17. Represents the Ammerman Campus at professional conferences and meetings related to career services.
  18. Serves on College-wide and campus committees.
  19. Assists the Dean of Students Office in responding to problems, complaints, or conflicts.
