Assistant Academic Chair

The Assistant Academic Chair is an administrative position that reports to the Academic Chair. Under the supervision of the Academic Chair, the Assistant Chair provides strong academic leadership, personnel supervision, and student assistance. As directed by the Chair, the Assistant Chair assists in supervision of all the department’s course and programmatic offerings, including day, evening, weekend, extensions, distance-learning and other modes for delivery of instruction. Additional expectations of the Assistant Academic Chair include participation in campus and College functions (such as commencement), meetings of full-time and adjunct faculty, awards and recognition ceremonies, and curriculum advisory councils.

Specific duties include the following:

  1. Supervise faculty, program leaders and support staff as assigned by the academic chair;
  2. Assist the academic chair in the design of academic class schedules (except continuing education) and determination of teaching assignments that will best serve student and curricular needs;
  3. Assist the academic chair in promoting effective and innovative instructional methods through collaboration with departmental faculty and by encouraging appropriate professional development activities;
  4. Assist the academic chair in promoting program growth through evaluation of existing courses and curricula, revision or development of new courses and programs, and participation in program reviews, program accreditation and Middle States and other reaccreditation self-studies.
  5. Assist the academic chair in student recruitment efforts for the academic programs within the department;
  6. Assist the academic chair in responding to student academic problems;
  7. Provide academic advisement for incoming and continuing students;
  8. Assist the academic chair in the recruitment of new full-time and adjunct faculty and in providing orientation and a mentoring process;
  9. Evaluate faculty, as assigned by the academic chair, and make personnel recommendations to the academic chair;
  10. Teach classes in accordance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement governing the Guild of Administrative Officers;
  11. Carry out other relevant duties as determined and assigned by the academic chair.
