ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR SPECIAL SERVICES
The Assistant Director for Special Services reports directly to the Director of Counseling and is responsible for overseeing programs and services for students identified with a learning, emotional and/or physical disability. Specific responsibilities include the following:
1. Interpreting psycho-educational diagnostic assessments for students in an effort to determine eligibility for services and appropriate academic placement.
2. Facilitating referrals from members of professional staff, faculty, or appropriate personnel in the secondary school system to enhance the recruitment of potential students with documented disabilities.
3. Possessing a comprehensive understanding of appropriate legislation such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act as they apply to providing accommodations to students with disabilities in post-secondary education.
4. Providing educational programs to the general campus population and in particular to the faculty. Increase awareness of disabilities and the needs of Special Services in order to enhance the ability of students with documented disabilities to succeed in both the academic and general learning environment.
5. Assisting with the resolution of academic accommodations and/or disability management challenges.
6. Supporting faculty through the provision of appropriate academic accommodations required by students.
7. Providing academic advising to students with documented disabilities to include, but not be limited to, appropriate course level placement.
8. Facilitating increased retention levels of students with disabilities through providing appropriate programs, counseling services and/or referrals to external resources.
9. Developing and maintaining confidential student records.
10. Creating monthly reports and a comprehensive annual, report identifying the number and types of students served, outreach activities, programming efforts, and other relevant issues.
11. Further developing and maintaining a referral network for students with disabilities to appropriate community agencies.
12. Supervision of support staff, management of departmental budget and the planning and implementation of short and long-range goals for the department.
13. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Counseling.
